Instead of Genting, about 2 hours away from KL, which offers a casino and amusement park; I opted for Penang Island about 4-5 hours by bus (23 ringgits) from KL.

Visit historical Fort Cornwallis with a statue of Sir Francis Light, founder of modern day Penang.

Batu Ferringhi has picturesque beaches, although the beachfront isn't too sandy, fishing vessels dock right along the beach, and hotel sewer lines lead out to canals which flow out to the beach, so I would think twice about swimming for long periods.

You'll notice many new luxury high rise condominiums and high end
hotels along the beach and there are some nice shopping malls such as Gurney Plaza in Georgetown. KOMTAR and Pragin Malls are lower-to mid range.

A visit would not be complete without Penang's Chinatown...very quaint and traditional with many temples and clan houses.

Most of the Chinese here speak Hokkien dialects from southern Fujian Province. But most know Mandarin so Cantonese would not be as useful here.
