St. Mere Eglise is where that unlucky airborne ranger (Private Steele) got stuck on the roof of the church after dropping in on the village. Maybe he was actually safer there than on the ground?? I don't know, but I'm sure he must have suffered some hearing loss after being that close to the bells! You can go inside the church. It's nice... very church-y. Right across the street is the Airborne Museum which is well worth the visit. |
| | This is the inside of the St. Mere Eglise. There isn't much to distinguish it from other churches in France, but the historical importance of the region and the paratrooper-on-the-roof story will make it interesting to many Americans who are in Normandy to visit WWII sites. |
