Montreal is a first class, cosmopolitan city. It's located in North America, but it has a European feel to it.

SUMMER

Montreal pulses with festivals ranging from comedy to film to the famous International Jazz; art exhibits and theatre troops; performance art, concerts, outdoor cafes and open-air markets; the "Old Port" area is host to some charming, romantic little restaurants (not my style but still noteworthy) and "starving artist" fare; cool cafes, clubs and boutiques along the hip rue St. Laurent....and the list goes on.

WINTER
During the cold winter months, Montreal hides her face and presents a more conservative "underground" persona. I'm still amazed at how I could get around the city just by using the subway system and the underground mall walks - without ever having to expose myself to the elements. It literally became a completely different city, all underground.

Parlez-vous Francais?

Don't hesitate to break out your bad French in Montreal - you'll be welcomed whether you pronounce "eau" with a tell-tale American nasal twang or deliver it with a perfect French accent. The people are gracious and more than willing to go along as you call the shots.

In other words (literally!), if you want to practice your French, you'll find most Montreal natives will accomodate you. On the other hand, if you are intimidated by everyone speaking in a foreign language then voilà - just as quickly, you'll find they are more than happy to shift into English so that you feel more comfortable.

That's just typical Montreal for you.

FIN

But perhaps most endearing about Montreal isn't her savoir-faire or chic style or even the amazing architecture and first class food - it's the people. Montreal is in my opinion, the single most TOLERANT metropolis of North America - maybe even the Western Hemisphere.

Montreal, je t'adore beaucoup!!!!!!!

Montreal, je l'adore aussi. Thanks for the tip on the QE -- what a great way of seeing it! But I'm sure their policy will have to change once 1000 VTers come tramping through.
