Staying in the French Quarter

Hotels that are in the French Quarter (where you want to be if you're looking for
round-the-clock action) and which have a very French Quarter feel to them in
terms of design and architecture - AND which are reasonably priced, are:

> St. Ann Marie Antoinette Hotel(on Conti St)
> Andrew Jackson Hotel (Royal St.)
> Hotel St. Marie (Toulouse St.)
> Dauphine Orleans Hotel (Dauphine St.)
> French Market Inn (Decatur St.)
> Prince Conti Hotel (Conti St.)
> Place D'Armes (St. Ann St.)
> St. Pierre Hotel (Burgundy St.)

And for a special treat, check out the Monteleone Hotel on Royal St. (I wrote about the Carousel Bar in one of my tips. It's a landmark in the Quarter, and a place with a lot of character. )You can see more of it at its website Hotel Monteleone.

And finally, there's also a cool guesthouse called Lamothe House (on Esplanade which is the very edge of the French Quarter.
It's within walking distance of the French Quarter ) (the blocks go from 100 to
1000, with residential areas starting around the 700 blocks. Sometimes it can
be a bit dicey from the 800 block up to Esplanade, but if you're gutsy and in
the mood for some very cool atmosphere (and if the other hotels are booked),
this could be your spot. It's very "French Quarter" in its ambience.

Unique Qualities: For some great deals (and New Orleans can serve up some surprisingly great deals, depending on when you go), go to the Orbitz website.

This link takes you to the main New Orleans page where it shows the various sections (such as French Quarter, Garden District, Central Business District, etc).

Once you're there, just click on "French Quarter" link and you'll see the hotels I've listed PLUS many more.

Staying in the Garden District Pontchartrain Hotel Review

The Garden District is a welcome alternative to the hustle and bustle of the French Quarter. The only disadvantage to staying in the Garden District is the issue of transportation - which really isn't even a disadvantage. It's just a hop onto the streetcar (generally within a minute or two walk from wherever hotel you might be staying) down to the French Quarter or anywhere else Uptown - or, you can grab a cab if you're out after 1:00am when the streetcar stops running.

Otherwise, staying in the Garden District can be a singularly charming experience...you're in the Uptown, gentrified area of New Orleans, where all the famous historical AND renovated mansions are located. It's lovely to stroll along St. Charles Avenue and gaze at the homes - or explore the neighborhoods behind St. Charles Avenue, and marvel at the architecture of some of these homes. It's a real treat.

I recommend the following hotels for starters:

> Prytania Park Hotel (Prytania St.)
> Quality Inn & Suites St. Charles (St. Charles Ave.)
> Pontchartrain Hotel (St. Charles Ave.)

Unique Qualities: The link below takes you to the main New Orleans page of Orbitz Travel, where it shows the various sections (such as French Quarter, Garden District, Central Business District, etc).

Once you're there, just click on "Garden District" link and you'll see the hotels I've recommended, PLUS many more.

Staying in the Central Business District The Roosevelt New Orleans, A Waldorf Astoria Collection Hotel Review
Show Prices

There are a number of hotels in the Central Business District (CBD) but the two that I'm recommending are:

> Le Pavillon (Poydras St.)

Le Pavillon is a kind of "Greek Revival" type of a hotel. It's white marble with columns and statues in the front. It's on the small size which makes it rather cozy and charming. It's within walking distance of the French Quarter, though you can also catch the streetcar for one or two stops before Canal St. Be careful walking around at night, though. If you're even slightly tipsy it might be worth grabbing a cab to get back to the hotel.

> Fairmont Hotel (Baronne St.)

The Fairmont is more of a fancy spot...elegant and old-fashioned. The rooms are comfortably appointed and there's a fantastic bar there called "Le Sazerac" which is where the famous drink "Le Sazerac" originated (look out...this is a STRONG one!). It also has a 24 hour bistro called "Baily's" where you can get eggs benedict at 3:00am accompanied by hot chocolate or a mimosa. I admit, I love this hotel.
