Restaurant Name: Uncle's

La Jolla managers Jim and Gretchen steered me to Uncle’s and it was advice well heeded. We had a delicious seafood dinner and what the restaurant lacks in terms of view, it more than compensates in quality of food. Everything is made fresh (or caught fresh) and some of the staff even prepare specific dishes (like garlic mashed potatoes or grilled veggies). There's a certain pride that one misses when going to the bigger establishments. We found it in full force here.

I was glad to have insisted upon this because many visitors opt for the more popular places like "Islamorada Fish Company" which, while offering great sunset views bayside, don't live up to their reputations when it comes to the actual food. We started out with cocktails at such a place, but once the sun went down, we jammed across the street to Uncle's for what we hoped would be the meal of the weekend.

IT WAS!

Favorite Dish: I ordered the mahi-mahi almondine, though I had a hard time deciding between that and any of the other ways it could be prepared (the sauces are spectacular here, and the owner has a signature sauce called "Le Pree" which contains artichoke, mushrooms and white wine. I forget now why I didn't order that one...??!!!)

Ultimately, we all ordered something different and each one of us left feeling totally satisfied.

For dessert, I recommend the fresh banana-coconut pie!!!

Restaurant Name: Pierre's Restaurant

I probably would not have come here if it weren't for the fact that my friend rented it out for her beautiful wedding.

Pierre's isn't your traditional "Keys" type eatery; that is, it's a refined, haute-cuisine atmosphere imbued with colonial charm and a touch of elegant Caribbean, amidst a picture-perfect setting (and an astronomical price tag that no doubt accompanies the gastronomical delights!)...no wonder weddings take place on the premises.

All things considered, I would highly recommend Pierre's if you are commemorating something special or celebrating a milestone event...or, if you're just in the mood for a refined atmosphere and candlelight romance.

Note: the sunsets here are sublime.

Favorite Dish: I ordered snapper almondine, and started out with a gorgeous salad that included sweet pear slices and warm goat cheese.

The "piece de resistance" however, was the desert. I ordered the "Chocolate Bomb" which was a small, souflé type chocolate cake that oozed a rich chocolate pudding filling (not overpoweringly so...just enough in the middle to make every mouthful a moist explosion of decadence).

To wit, I didn't even mind not having any wedding cake afterwards, having satisfied my sweet tooth with aforementioned confectionary delight.
