This key is famed as the “Sport Fishing Capital of the World”. Fellow Floridians love it because it’s smack in the middle of the islands (which themselves are divided into Upper Keys, Middle Keys and Lower Keys). “Islamorada” is Spanish for “purple island”. The jury is out as to whether the name derives from the colorful bougainvillea and beautiful orchids that proliferate throughout the island, or comes from a purple shelled snail that once inhabited this key. A Cuban friend of mine observed that at sunset, the water seems to turn a shimmering violet – hence, “Islamorada”. Regardless of its origins, this island is a peaceful tonic to the everyday stresses of life. It’s easily accessible (precisely because it’s less than an hour and a half from busy Miami) and invites the visitor to relax, unwind, and accept nature at its priceless face value. One of my favorite keys. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For a quick (video) spin through the Florida Keys, click here |
