Well, I don't stay in dumps (at least not any more, in my old age) and, I enjoy nice accomodations - which is what I think this place is.

Frommers travel books claims it's one of the best values in San Francisco. It's easy on the budget and best of all, it's in a great location (the Marina District, which is within walking distance of Golden Gate Bridge, the Wharf, Ghiradelli Square, Coit Tower, Lombard Street, and even North Beach area.)

Unique Qualities: It's more like a bed and breakfast and only has 40 rooms, tastefully decorated if not a bit on the small side. The building itself is historic, built in 1924 and having survived several earthquakes. There's a lovely marble lobby and one of my favorite features, their cozy sitting room where sherry is served at 4:00pm every afternoon, on the house. Clean and safe.

I enjoyed staying here and would consider staying here again - like I said, you can't beat the location.

  • This is a small, family operated bed & breakfast located in the Nob Hill area (just north of Union Square). It has a very European feel to it. I found it to be clean and comfortable, though a bit on the old side (it was built in 1913 and has that sort of "turn of the century" vibe).

Unique Qualities: What's good about this hotel is that the cable car runs along Powell Street all the way to Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach, and you can pick it up right at the corner. The hotel is very centrally located near Chinatown, the theatres, and the downtown financial district.

  • I haven't (yet) stayed in this hotel but a friend of mine has and says it's great.

Unique Qualities: It's one of San Fran's hip boutique hotels, but more importantly, it's recognized as one of the top ecological, environmentally friendly and proactive hotels in the city - completely "green" friendly!

I thought the City Lights Bookstore was pretty cool. But then I love everything about SF! Absolutely one of the most laidback cities I've ever visited. Great idea to go real estate shopping ;-)
