Most people will run to any of the touristy eateries at Fisherman's Wharf - but if you want the real McCoy, then you'll make it a point to eat at the Tadich Grill.

It's a true seafood institution, having been in continuous operation since 1849 (during the California Gold Rush days), and is still family owned. It's amazing to think that what was once first established as a small coffee stand by three Croatian immigrants, is now one of San Francisco's landmark restaurants.

Besides your standard (and very delicious) sourdough bread, you'll find a varied menu offering specials and a large selection of fresh seafood, prepared practically any way you want.

Open for lunch and dinner, Monday through Saturdays.

    No reservations.

I think I probably ate lunch here the majority of the time I was last in San Francisco. This place doesn't really sell cigars (and of course it's "illegal" to smoke inside a California eatery) but the ambience is reminscent of the kind of place where you'd love to pop in and have a bite to eat.

Their specialty is the grilled focaccia sandwich - you can get just about any variety. They're delicious!!!

Aside from the lunch fare, this is one of the best places for people-watching...situated on the corner, right next to Washington Square Park...you can see the Sts. Peter and Paul Church (where Marilyn Monroe was photographed with Joe DiMaggio after they married) from practically any vantage point inside the bistro.

I thought the City Lights Bookstore was pretty cool. But then I love everything about SF! Absolutely one of the most laidback cities I've ever visited. Great idea to go real estate shopping ;-)
