City by the Bay...

The beautiful Golden Gate Bridge
North America's Most Beloved City

I think that hands down, San Francisco is arguably North America's most beloved city. Sure, you have your Manhattan, your Boston, your Toronto, your Chicago...but there always seems to be a disclaimer for each one. "Too many people" in New York; Boston is "too stand-offish", Chicago "too windy", it's "too cold" in Toronto....but San Francisco remains its captivating, colorful, invigorating, indestructible and achingly beautiful self amidst its famous history of fires and earthquakes, and despite its occasional controversies and scandals.

San Francisco's Many Personalities

The city is known and most frequently referenced by its neighborhoods, which I'll attempt to list here (and I know I'm missing some but these are the majority): Nob Hill, Pacific Heights, North Beach (Little Italy), Chinatown, Castro District, SoMa, The Haight, Russian Hill, Union Square, Richmond Hill, Marina District, Noe Valley, Mission District, Financial District, etc. It's fun to take on each neighborhood and discover for yourself, the nuances and features that contribute to the distinct personalities of each area. You'll almost always hear a local refer to his or her residence not necessarily by street, but by neighborhood. Even knowing where someone lives in San Francisco, to a degree tells you a little bit about that person.

I love that about San Francisco.
Universal Treasure...City by the Bay

One VTer observed that San Francisco is "the city that other cities envy" - the hair on my arms rise just typing that description because I've never read a more accurate one. San Francisco on a warm, sunny day is absolutely a beautiful dream come true; on a cold, foggy day it is contemplative and introspective, and you find yourself mirroring this feeling. The city is seductive, eclectic, intellectual and multi-cultural.

It is one of the United States' greatest gifts - a truly universal treasure.

A shame that you missed the home of your frind next to Lombard Street. Would have been fun to see all those tourist coming and go seen from his place!

I thought the City Lights Bookstore was pretty cool. But then I love everything about SF! Absolutely one of the most laidback cities I've ever visited. Great idea to go real estate shopping ;-)
