Getting TO/AROUND: Just a quick note in case anyone has any doubts - the bus systems in Israel are great. "Egged" is the official national transit system - and the second largest bus company in the world, after Greyhound!

I took a bus from Jerusalem to Eilat and it was a really enjoyable ride. The buses are comfortable and air conditioned. As far as I can recall, our bus departed on time and there were no unforseen delays.

Be sure to check about times, especially on Friday - Shabbat.

    Transportation: What's a "Sherut"?

Getting TO/AROUND: A "sherut" is like a multiple passenger taxi service. They run on fixed rates and go in between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. They're fairly inexpensive and the only down-side is having to wait until they fill up - as well as dropping off each passenger. If you're not pressed for time, it's a safe and economical way to travel.

In fact, I met some very nice people when I took a sherut from the Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv, to Jerusalem.

    That was a free bonus!

Getting TO/AROUND: Israel is a VERY safe place to drive a rental car. All three times I've visited, I've rented a car and have never had a problem. In fact I consider it to be the best way to see Israel at one's own pace.

Here are two local (Israeli) car rental companies, both of whom are reputable and depending on the model you reserve, reasonable! Note: You'll get hammered by the "collision damage waiver" assessed on a daily basis in Israel, so make sure to check with your credit card company first to see if they offer such coverage when you use their card - this can save you up to a couple hundred dollars.

For more information on this option, check out the following local car rental URLS:

    Sixt Car Rental
    or
    Eldan Car Rental

Sensational stuff! "Insight into Israel" should be the title of YOUR book. If I ever get there I want to take you along for your sensitivity. Funny, it's in all that you write. My only complaint is that you know what all those big words mean. Smile

Very insightful, analytical and sensitive page about my homeland, Michele. Studied one or two things from outsider's perspective. Halleluya !!
