Unfortunately for me, I only scheduled enough time to spend one night in Aqaba, before heading out to Petra the following day.
The little I saw of Aqaba in the waning sun as we crossed over the border from Israel, was pleasant.

For the record, Aqaba is one of Jordan's more touristic cities - a little something for everyone ranging from the world's oldest church, to scuba diving in the Red Sea. It also has the biggest flag in the world - the second time I was in Eilat (Israel) looking across the bay over to Aqaba, I saw this huge thing flying in the air....it was monstruous in size, I'm telling you. I got my telephoto lense out (not that I really needed to) and saw that it was a GIANT national flag of Jordan!
There is no escaping it!

How to Take on Aqaba
Anyways so back to the city itself: I think it would be worth scheduling maybe 2 days....one day for diving/snorkeling/relaxing at the sea, and the next day for doing a Wadi Rum day trip....four wheeling around the desert with the possibility of staying overnight under the beduoin stars...
...I recall seeing all kinds of advertisements for archaeological and leisure excursions to the surrounding wadis, and there are local travel agencies along the main street in Aqaba who can arrange this for you.
