The Rose Colored City

For a quick "snap-shot" of Petra, see my travelogue now

The Siq

If you're wondering who the Nabataeans are - they aren't. At least not anymore. But they left extraordinary evidence of their intelligence, architechtural prowess and overall ingenuity by way of the famous rose-colored town of Petra. It is from Petra that this ancient Arab people controlled the trade routes across what was then Arabia, over 2000 years ago. Part of Petra's magic comes from the fact that it is a city carved entirely out of sandstone, rocks and cliffs.

It's fabulously dramatic.

And, whether you're traveling through the gorge's narrow entrance called the Siq, catching your first glimpse of the magnificent Treasury building, or passing by the ampitheatre and royal tombs - you'll be impressed with and humbled by this place.

As a bonus, there's the Al Deir Monastery awaiting you at the top of one of the cliffs toward the back end of the park....it's a 40 minute, fairly easy climb up the rocky cliff. The vista awaiting you is worth it. I'd visited Petra before so I knew how rewarding the climb was.

This last time I visited, I was 4 months pregnant and still I insisted on climbing up to the top. It was a longer and a bit more difficult for me this time around, but every bit as rewarding to reach the top and see the Al Deir Monastery crowning the plateau...to walk just a bit further and survey the wadis that seem to go on for miles...Aaron's tomb in the distance....the sun setting on the horizon....

For this alone, a trip to Petra is worth a lifetime of dreams.
Gorgeous vista of the Al Deir Monastery
