Israel's "Unofficial" Capital | Street Life along Nachlat Benjamin |
The first place most people will land when they arrive in Israel is at the Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv.
Tel Aviv is not the prettiest of cities - in fact, it gives the impression of a city that sprang up haphazardly from nowhere and suddenly now finds itself home to over 400,000 residents. But the truth is, Tel Aviv was founded by some 60 families back around 1910 as a Jewish neighborhood near the older Arab town of Jaffa.
From 1948 until the present, Tel Aviv has been growing by leaps and bounds and is known in contemporary circles for its vibrant nightlife, interesting museums, exotic markets, stimulating cafes, terrific restaurants, great shopping and yes - beautiful beaches. Since Israel occupies such a small area of land (hard to believe it can hold so much controversy!), Tel Aviv is often the best and the easiest starting point from which to launch a trip throughout the country. |

Last time we were in Israel was December of 2004 and the weather was not the most cooperative during the few days we stay in the Tel Aviv area. We only managed to spend a negligible amount of time in nearby "sister city" Jaffa, with its of its beautifully restored old Arab quarter filled with galleries, shops and restaurants.....so we're definitely making time to explore Jaffa on our next trip. Likewise we plan to wander the charming, narrow streets and alleys of the artsy quarter in Tel Aviv known as Neve Tzedek. We were fortunate enough to have dinner at a little restaurant there near the Suzanne Dellal Center, so we got just enough of a taste to know we want to see more of this particular area. Incidentally, from Tel Aviv it's a great day trip to head up to Caesaria or to Haifa....again, things we hoped to accomplish on our last trip but will have to re-schedule for our next trip! |
Despite the little time we had in Tel Aviv during this last trip, we were still able to squeeze in such activities as people-watching from the vantage point of a beachside cafe, exploring the colorful fruits and vegetables on display at the Carmel Market in the Yemenite Quarter, laughing with some street performers along the Pedestrian Mall on Nachlat Benjamin St., and soaking in some Tel Aviv nightlife (not too much since I was after all, four months pregnant at the time!) at couple of cafes.... It's best to see Tel Aviv through the knowing eyes of a local. Thanks Sharon. Nobody can show off Tel Aviv like you can.
