'Mode': AROUND
Category: Subway/Metro
Getting TO/AROUND: If London's Underground could be said to link Dante's 'Nine Circles Of Hell', then I'm sure that it will be Vienna's U-bahn system that will shuttle you away once you manage to get past St Peter's Pearly Gates! No doubt about it, compared to my beloved capital city London, Vienna has a public transport system to be proud of. The shops found within the major stations and their underpasses make the system feel that little more lived-in and safer, litter is under control and the station I visited seemed light white and bright. Admittedly a number of guidebooks do flag up warnings about Karlsplatz and its addicts butI found it generally unthreatening and well policed. Thankfully the underground trains certainly seem to run on time and they glide around in an impressively efficient manner - even the automated station announcements that sound out on board before each stop sound reassuringly confident and precise. No doubt about it, the underground system makes Vienna easy to get around and with the various passes on offer, good value for money too!

sourbugger Sat Dec 6, 2008 20:59 UTC excellent stuff. does the fact that the only country you have visited outside of the UK is austria give rise to the theory that you harbour dodgy right wing views ? | Trekki Sun Sep 21, 2008 07:05 UTC Oh Nick, you made my morning with your description of how to cross the roads :-)) Is that divine choco Christmas tree a Demel one? Oh my, and now I want to have winter so that I can eat Kartoffelpuffer, here by the way with apple puree :-) | nomorewars Sat Jul 26, 2008 19:11 UTC Visited Vienna in ’98. Spent my three-day trip in the hospital after rescuing some drunk who almost drowned in the Danube. Compared to Extreme Reading, however, hypothermia is a cakewalk. | hunterV Wed Jul 23, 2008 20:14 UTC Hello, Nick! I like your English humour! Splendid pages! I agree with you about the quality and quantity! |
