A Living Ghost Town

Virginia City evokes images of cowboys and "Bonanza"--the television series. The tour guide quickly dispelled this belief, however. He said that there were no cowboys in Virginia City--only miners. He was probably correct because the surrounding area was desert.

Virginia City used to be a mining boom town. Now it relies mostly on tourism. Its main street looks like an Old West street with many people in period costumes. Were it not for the cars and the tourists, the illusion that you were in a bygone era would have been complete.

Virginia City was part of the whole-day tour package that I took in Reno. After picking us up at our hotels, the tour bus took us to Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe, Carson City, and Virginia City. It was a cost-effective way to see the tourist attractions near Reno.
