Situated on the outskirts of Mwanza, overviewing the lake, Hotel/Restaurant Tilapia offers a wonderful place to relax after a dusty and noisy day in town. Start off with a sun-downer and enjoy the beautiful view of the lake. Continue with a grilled tilapia and finish off with a cup of coffee or chai. Or go downstairs to the chinese or indian restaurant that is also a part of Tilapia.
If you come here in the afternoon, you can anjoy a dip in the wonderful swimming pool and have a snack in the bar. All in all, this is a perfect place to relax in beautiful surroundings.

  • Restaurant Name: Tunza Lodge

Tunza Lodge is a restaurant/hotel situated directly on the shore of the lake on the outskirts of Mwanza. Together with Tilapia it has the absolute best location in town. It's a beautiful, small resort on the beach that offers really good food and a great atmosphere. In the afternoon you can go swimming here (if you're not to worried about catching bilharzia!), play beach volley or just sit in the sand and relax and then go for dinner in the restaurant either outside on the beach or inside (where you are not bothered too much by mosquitoes). The food is OK, nothing special, and you should go there mainly because of the peace and quiet and beautiful surroundings.

Directions: Follow the tar road out of town (direction towards the airport). On the left hand side, there should be a sign guiding you the rest of the way. Otherwise, just ask the locals.

This is without a doubt the best food you will find in town. It's delicious! And I'm not only saying that because I have been in Tanzania for so long that I have forgotten what good food tastes like. It IS good. It's mixture of chinese and Indian food is superb and the choice and varieties of food is magnificent. Furthermore it's clean (even the toilet!) and cool. The service is excellent and if you have any special requirements or questions the chef will be happy to help you out. Only minus is the interior which is not exactly exiting. But the food makes up for that. The place is always crowded (by Indians) on weekends, so be there at around 7 or 7.30.

Favorite Dish: They make the best garlic naan here - a sort of flat bread/pancake, with spices and garlic...it is to die for. Also the fish fingers is a good starter. But all in all, you can't really miss when you eat here!

The New Mwanza Hotel: New Mwanza

  • Restaurant Name: The New Mwanza Hotel

New Mwanza has a very good terrace restaurant where you can get everything from Ugali to T-bone to Chinese prawns. The food is excellent and the service very good as well. It's not the most interesting place to eat as goes for atmosphere, as you can only look down on the street to the occasional street child or taxi, and later on the people going dancing in Rumours. The restaurant is rarely overcrowded, and is mostly used by the guests of the hotel. Once in a while there is (awful) live music in the restaurant and private parties (which are easy to be invited into and very funny indeed!).

Salma's Cone: Best icecream and burgers in town

  • Restaurant Name: Salma's Cone

Salma's Cone was one of my favourite places to go for lunch or snack. It's the only place in town where they serve ice cream (safe to eat) and when you have been in Tanzania for more than 3 months you will truly come to appreciate this! They also have all sorts of sweets and fabulous milkshakes and fruit juices, so try out the whole thing.

They also serve the BEST burgers ever! Well, maybe a tourist wouldn't think so, but again, when you have stayed for a longer time, the burger from Salma's is heaven!

Salma's is always very crowded - by both locals and Indians, but be patient. It's closed at night time.

Favorite Dish: The beef burger (500 sh), sundaes with chocolate dippings and nuts (600 sh) and the best passion fruit juice in town (300 sh)

If you feel like relaxing with a pizza you should go to Kuleana's next to New Mwanza Hotel. They 'specialize' in pizzas, but you can also get chapati, doughnuts, eggs, bread rolls, cake, chips and omelettes + juice, sodas, coffe and tee. It's not exactly a culinary experience, but nevertheless you always seem to find yourself sitting at Kuleanas at least once a week - wether it's for a soda, a pizza or just to chat with someone you know! The prices are moderate, and it's only more well-to-do tanzanians who go here together with wazungo.

congulatulation for being curious . some aspects in your comments irritates me, that you failed to connect with the cultural attitudes, typical of any Muzungu generalising/failed to take control/save his/her purpose. Im a Musukuma from Mwanza living in CA

Mette, great tips on a place that has never been on my mind, but enthusiasm seems to be one of your characteristics and one can really feel it in your page :-) I guess one really has to go to decide if to love or hate travelling in Africa. One day I will.
