Brussels Capital City of Belgium

Home of the EU

Grand Place
The best place to start is in the Grande-Place. Its a huge cobbled area surrounded by big ornate buildings. They have markets there on a regular basis and well worth a visit. The place is full of tourists and EU representatives, mostly everyone speaks English and is a safe clean place to visit.

A few tips, service is included in most restaurant bills, if it was exceptional, tip a bit more, if not, forget it.... since the introduction of the Euro the price of eating out has increased. People like to do this of course, but they eat out less often and the price is a factor.

One thing worth noting is that taxis are MUCH cheaper than Edinburgh... the one back from the airport *prebooked* was £20 which is a rip off but cheaper than leaving the car there for a week.
Small side street in Brussels

Brussels at Night

Very safe to walk around in, although watch your bag. I love the pretty little streets full of cafes and bars. It was a little chilly to eat outside but lots of the terraces were heated so you could eat outside if you wanted to.

Most of the greek restaurants have a guy outside whose job is to entice you in. I find this most off-putting and are more likely to walk away from those places. I guess it's being European-minded, we like to make our own choices as far as possible, notwithstanding the EU's decrees on just about everything we can or can't do.
ummm anybody's guess

Interesting carvings

This was on one of the buildings in the Grande Place. I was a bit stuck to work out what it was... maybe the result of a Jewish Ceremony where the circumsisers were a bit over enthusiatic? The banana before the EU regs were introduced????

You decide.....
