Bangkok Transportation

BTS Skytrain: Sky Train
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: By far the cleanest and most comfortable way to travel around Bangkok. It is new, quiet and you get good views of the city and it's size.

    City Buses: Buses
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: Cheap and convenient, if a little crowded. I was hardly paying attention to where we were going as I was fascinated by the quick and skilful ticket and change technique of the bus conductress! She had this little metal tube of coins and tickets and, while keeping her feet without holding on (no mean task, I can assure you The driver clearly felt he wasn't doing his job if he left every passenger standing up!) she delivered change, tore and marked tickets, tided away the notes and sorted out her little box with very neat and deft movements. It was like poetry in motion.....

The bus? oh yes. Clean, airconditioned, but very full.

    Metered Taxis: Taxi cabs
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Car/Motor Home
Getting TO/AROUND: Luxury travel! Most convenient. As you step out of the air conditioned hotel, your glasses mist up with the heat and humidity, you are guided into the taxi car and immediately vision is restored... a miracle!

Pollution is reduced, you can listen to the radio in relative quiet, try to learn Thai or at least figure out what they are saying, drivers sometimes speak English and are hilarious in their comments and phrases! Mind you, they have hysterics when I try to speak anything at all..... door to door travel, comfortable in traffic jams, however,
DO AGREE THE PRICE FIRST and, THEY DON'T ALWAYS KNOW WHERE ANYTHING IS!!! I have had the experience, that apart from London UK licensed cabs and New York, most taxi drivers rarely know where you want to go to. Our drivers often stopped and made phone calls to determine the location of the hotel.....

    Tuk-tuks: Tuk-tukking!
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: Oh, this is the real way to go! You are right in there with all the noise, colours, he stops whenever you see a really nice shop, he can get through gaps that you couldn't walk through on your own, he changes direction on a man hole cover, he stops and waits for you, finds you a particular shopping item. Only drawback is that you end up with a headache from the noise and a sore throat from the pollution, and of course, it's a bit hot unless you are actually moving along.

If you really want to take your life in your hands, try the motorbike taxis. Fast, breathtaking in their daring skills and for the passenger who is totally insane...... They are the cheapest of all
