Catalina Island-- a beautiful California retreat.

by Erin74 - last update: Mar 26, 2004

An excellent weekend getaway...

At the fountain in central Avalon.
Catalina is just off the coast of southern California, less than an hour away from Los Angeles and Orange County. It's a lovely weekend getaway destination and pleasant trip for anyone visiting California. The main city, Avalon, is a small, slow-paced village with breathtaking views of the harbor and ocean. You'll want to stay in Avalon and use it as a base to explore the island.

There is a lot to do on Catalina. Many water activities are available, including kayaking, snorkeling, swimming and guided ocean tours. There is also ample hiking, several points of interest and a couple of nice beaches. Catalina is very romantic and weddings are held here on a regular basis. In the summer you might attend the Silent Film Festival at the Casino. Come to Catalina and enjoy!

It's easy to reach Catalina Island from the mainland Southern California. The island is accessible by boat or helicopter, from San Diego, Oceanside, Balboa Island, Long Beach and Los Angeles.
The beach, with the Casino in the distance
Catalina Island has been a favorite getaway for Californians for decades. In fact, it was once a popular spot for shooting films and celebrity vacations. Cary Grant, Clark Gable and Errol Flynn all spend time on the island. Natalie Wood's 1981 drowning off the coast of Catalina put the island in the national spotlight.

Today, you're more likely to see just regular folks lying on the beach and enjoying the sunshine.
