A Joshua Tree in the National Park

Explore the desert landscape...

Joshua Tree National Park covers nearly 800,000 acres in the desert of southern California. Here, the Colorado Desert and the Mojave Desert meet. The eastern Colorado is drier and covered with cholla cactus. The western Mojave is where you'll find the remarkable Joshua Trees. Together, these deserts create a unique and memorable landscape.

In 1994, President Clinton signed the California Desert Protection Act and turned Joshua Tree into a National Park. Today, it's easy to explore the park.

Located within a three hour drive from Los Angeles, Joshua Tree National Park is a very special and fascinating place. Even those who don't normally care for the desert will find it an exciting getaway, full of sights to explore and enjoy. It is easily accessible by car and a great place to spend a day or two.

The Joshua Trees

Joshua Tree National Park gets its name from the Joshua Trees that grow throughout this section of the desert. A unique growth, Joshua Trees were given their name by Mormon settlers who interpreted the trees' uplifted branches as a sign of hope. They felt they were being beckoned to the promised land by the Biblical figue, Joshua. Today, these trees dot the landscape and are a truly remarkable sight.

Unique Rock Formations

Another notable feature of Joshua Tree National Park are the large and impressibe rock formations seen throughout the park.

You can climb on these rocks, or just admire them from a distance.

Throughout the park, you'll see rock climbers ascending the more difficult peaks with climbing equipment.
