  • Grand Canal, this reversed “S” shape canal divided Venice into two halves with only three bridges across it. The canal is the life blood and highway of the city, gondoles, Vaporetti (water bus), water taxi as well as other commercial and private boats shared this “highway”, it gets crowded at times.

  • St. Mark’s Square, is where all the actions are. This area is the heart of Venice and a good starting place for exploring, listening to music or shopping. It is constantly filled with pigeons, street venders and pedestrian traffic jams, Napoleon called it “the most beautiful drawing room in all of Europe”, and I called it “the best place to rest and for people watching”.

  • The Campanile, located in St. Mark's Square was built in 1496 and has an enameled timepiece and animated figures of Moors that strike the hour. The bell tower is a copy of the original 9th century tower, which collapsed in 1902.

  • Rialto Bridge, this bridge was built in 1588 by Antonio da Ponte. It contains shops and double loaded walkways on both sides of the bridge, the view around Rialto Bridge was incredible, with the restaurants and shops close by. The surrounding area is a commercial hub, with open-air vegetable, fruit and fish markets close by.

  • The Basilica is very attractive on the outside as well as the inside, this magnificent structure dates back from the 11th century and was built to hold the relics of St. Mark the Evangelist, the city’s patron saint. The façade is richly decorated by copies of the four famous gilded bronze horses, while the interior museum contains mosaics and precious artworks, as well as their original bronze horses. Admission to the general area is free, you have to pay extra to visit other areas of the Basilica. You must check your backpack at an adjacent facility before entering the Basilica.

  • Doge’s Palace or “Palazzo Ducale” this old palace was a combination of the government, court, torture chamber and prison, The palace is filled with frescoes, paintings and a few examples of statuary by some of the Renaissance’s greatest artists.

The ”bridge of sighs” connects the palace and the prison was built in the 17th century, across the cannel where the prisoners walked across and took one last look of Venice prior to their execution or incarceration.
