An Old Town...

The Old Town, historical centre of Vilnius, is one of the largest in Eastern Europe (360 ha). The most valuable historic and cultural heritage is concentrated here. The buildings in the old town - there are about 1.5 thousand of them - were built in a number of different centuries, therefore, it is a mixture of all European architectural styles. Although Vilnius is often called a baroque city, here you will find some buildings of gothic, renaissance and other styles. The main sights of the city are the Gediminas Castle and the Cathedral Square, symbols of the capital. Their combination is also a gateway to the historic centre of the capital. Because of its uniqueness, the Old Town of Vilnius was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Cthedral Square

Founded on ancient pegan grounds dedicated to Perkunas, the god of thunder, the original church was built by Mindaugas the Great. The square is always full of people and tourist. The most famous meeting place in Vinius. Between the Tower and Cathedral there is a special brick on the ground named "A Miracle". While passing by don't forget to step on it and to make a wish. Then turn around by the clock direction three times. People say that wishes come true...

Sooner or later I'll visit your country, it attracks me a lot; in the meantime, Madrid is 3346 kms away from Vilnius, just in case you want to know/add the distance. Greetings.

I've been wondering about going to Vilnius - I tossed a coin to decide between a trip to Riga and a trip to Vilnius and Riga won. Next year I think I need no further convincing that Vilnius should be on the list of places to visit! Great photos! Mike
