Bujumbura is dusty and hot (at least in June). I was there just after the shooting in the streets stopped, and just before it started again. Amazingly, people are crowding the streets and are all smiling and friendly. I arrived on Sunday morning, and hundreds of people were at the beach (Lake Tanganjika) to exercise.
At night it is advised that one stays in the hotel - there is no other place to go. There were frequent power cuts, so that when you look out of the window, the capital is suddenly gone - no lights. Also no traffic to speak of at night.
Against my better judgement, my driver took me up into the mountains, to have a better look at the town. This is where the rebels were hiding, but I was lucky...
In October 2004 a peace accord was signed, lets hope it lasts! |
