Another lovely town from the great coffe era

Juparanã means in the indian language, Tupi Guarani, "Great River", while Barao means Baron. Indeed there was once a Baron of Juparanã, son of the Marquis of Baependy, who was the owner of several famrs by the River Paraíba. The main one, where the family lived the golden times of the coffee barons, was Santa Mônica. The current cute but poor little town grew around the farm of Monte Scylene that belonged princess Isabel. In 1886 the princess and her husband conde D'Eu created in the farm an elite boarding school. With the decleration of the Brazilian republic the state acquired property and adapted to serve as the first public clinic for peole suffering from substance abuse. The building is magnificient, with lovely pastel yellow and white colours. Come during the Festa de São Jorgee, at the end of April, and enjoy a wonderful procession of horses
