The busy centre where modernity sits side by side with old world charm, multinational by favelas, and atlantic rainforest by urban jungle! This is the heart of Rio in every respect that is really worth discovering. While tourists flock to beaches shaded by unimpressive apartment blocks of Copacabana and Ipanema, Centro has much to offer the traveller who seaks a more real feeling of Rio, its history and its culture.
What a magical place Rio is. Take tim to explore Centro, especially Sahara, and Santa Teresa, these areas still retain a good deal of historical buildings that have not yet been butchered by Rio´s real-estate craze. For more about Rio´s history, checkout my historical description of Rio de Janeiro.
Sahara, which I will explore in some detail later, is now the main shopping area, with lots of bric and brac shops and many other shops and services. Its very lively and colourful during the weekdays.
Although most tourists flock to Copacabana and Ipanema, I find alot of charm in the Centro and Lapa districts
