A fair-skinned tourist will stand out like a sore thumb in this place. Being Chinese, my companions and myself attract a lot of curious stares the moment we arrive in the country.

On one of our field trips, we attracted a lot of attention the minute we entered the museum grounds. After a tour of the museum, we stopped for a break and started chatting among ourselves. Next thing we know, the locals have formed a circle around us to study us in closer proximity. While the attention was not hostile, it was definitely unnerving. We soon move off to a different spot, but the awed crowd simply followed.

As foreigners walking on the streets, we also attracted a lot of attention from the local beggers and touts. Once one of them discover us, the rest would soon follow. I usually continue on my way without turning back or 'donating' . The mob can sometimes grow to a scary number, so the best approach is to walk faster towards a mall or hotel.
