CHINATOWN: Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Company of SF

This is a very small shop in China town where you can see them making fortune cookies. They will also let you sample the cookies. You can buy a bag of fortune cookies for $3 or you can get a naughty bag for $4. I opted for the naughty bag and found the fortunes to be very humorous. Example: Fu Ling Yu Says: On honeymoon, bride get sleepy. Can't stay awake for a second.

Things To Do: Grace Cathedral

I was amazed when I reached the steps leading to Grace Cathedral. I had read in my tour book that it was designed after Notre Dame in Chartre, so I thought it might be interesting to see. Outside the church, its beauty astonished me but, the real shock came when I entered the church. My eyes went straight to the right where I thought I saw what appeared to be a Keith Haring picture. I went over to look at it and it was an altarpiece that was indeed by Keith Haring. It was displayed in a room called the "AIDS Interfaith Chapel". This chapel was designed to remember people who had died from AIDS, survivors and caregivers. I was very impressed by this church for another reason. After looking at the Keith Haring, I went over to look at the pamphlets by the Cathedral. Their mission statement was directed towards anyone willing to attend their services. "We believe in one God, known to us in Jesus Christ, also known by different names in different traditions. We seek to transform the world, beginning with ourselves,…"

Diego Rivera painted a few murals in San Francisco. One is located in the San Francisco Art Institute; the next at San Francisco City College; a third is at San Francisco City Club (formerly the Stock Exchange) and one is at Berkeley. I visited the one at the San Francisco Art Institute. There you can find, "The Making of a Fresco Showing the Building of a City" which was painted in 1931. It is right around the corner from Lombard Street, so if you make it there you should walk another block (down hill) to see the mural. Another benefit to seeing this mural is that it is totally free. You just walk in to see it and other art from the institute.

This museum is incredible. It seems to exemplify the modern attitude of SF. I was very pleased by the permanent collection and absolutely loved the visiting exhibit of Romare Bearden (which continues until May 16, 2004). My only complaint was going to the gift shop and seeing so many postcards of pictures that were on rotation. I guess I will have to go back!
