Au Gourmet de l'Ile: Our Best Meal...and the Best Price!

  • Restaurant Name: Au Gourmet de l'Ile

This restaurant is fantastic. It's located on Ile St. Louis, the food is great, service is perfect and the price is absolutely right. We paid 77 Euro for 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 desserts, a bottle of wine, a large bottle of water and 2 coffees. Service (tip) was included but we gave a generous tip anyway because the service was outstanding. Their menu is translated in a few languages, including English & German.

Favorite Dish: The appetizers we selected were both great - the artichoke heart and the stuffed mussels. I ordered the special which was lamb shoulder. It was so incredibly tender and tasty. The creme brulee was the best I had in Paris (and I had it a lot!).

Chartier: It's where the locals go
  • Tip Rating:

  • Restaurant Name: Chartier

This place is packed AND it's huge (it seats several hundred). Two of us went for lunch and were seated at a table for four with two strangers. No big deal but we definitely weren't expecting it (now you'll know). It's a grande place with soaring ceilings. In the 1890's it started out as a worker's canteen (bouillon) and has been open ever since.

I had roasted (rotiserrie) chicken leg and it was quite good. My boyfriend had sausage & sauerkraut...he wasn't impressed but everyone seemed to be ordering it.

Overall, I would say the food is average. It's classic French food at a really good price.

La Cagouille: All seafood...some fish heads
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: La Cagouille

We read about this seafood restaurant in the Frommer's Paris guide. My fiance and I love seafood so we decided to give it a try since the review was rather good. One thing we must have skipped over in the review was that the "seafood is prepared as simply and naturally as possible". I was a little disappointed when my red snapper came to me as 6 baby snappers with head, tail, everything in tact....some might like this but not my thing really.

Their menu is written in French only so even if your French isn't too bad it can be hard to translate names of fish (for me anyway). An English speaking waiter did his best to translate.

Overall, not great at all. We went elsewhere for dessert and cafe....we were afraid they might just serve us the beans. :)

always nice to see different angles on this favorite ET. I have one just like it really, but I just flipped through all my current Paris vt photos and among the zillion Tower shots, it's not there! ;-O now you remind me to go dig it up...
