The Heart of Chile: Santiago

by petirrojo - last update: Nov 2, 2004

National Cathedral, Plaza de Armas
"Oh Santiago," comes the disparaging remark. "Why would you want to go to Santiago?" The question comes not from friends and family (okay, it does come from them too), but from people who live in Chile. To them, the capital is the least of the country's attractions. And yet... there is something about the place.
Architectural jumble
One of the things that strikes you about this city is the "eclectic" architectural pairings: on one block you'll have Art Deco apartments, German influenced buildings, and others that would be at home in Belle Epoque Paris.

What I did not see much of are Spanish colonial buildings. It was explained to me that this was due to previous generations of Chilenos' desire to minimize the stamp of imperialist Spain... that and the frequent earthquakes that shake the city.
Phoning home in style
Just how would Superman make his quick changes with this delightful phone "booth"?

When you see something this charming you are struck with an immediate urge to abandon your mobile phone and return to an era of greater civility!

This quaint payphone is located in the area near Cerro Santa Lucia.

Pros:"Interesting, lively, inquisitive people"
Cons:"Pollution, congestion (1/3 of the nation's population live here!)"
In A Nutshell:"A character all its own: European, Latin, but ultimately unique Chilean"
