Since joining the Merchant Marines my work as taken me further and further west. When I was younger travel was not as fun because the destination was not my coice, but I've learned to make the most of my situation by finding the silver lining. Now I chose my destination although I'm often willing to let others chose my destiny. Alaska is well west of Florida and the best duty station for an avid nature lover.

Where ever I go I try to meet the locals. Sometimes I make friends and always I learn something. Whether I travel for business or pleasure I make a point to get to the local zoo if I can. The best zoo to me was the one in San Diego. The Anchorage Zoo was the only one where I have seen musk ox. The Atlanta Zoo has a famous Silver back gorilla and the zoo in Little Rock was pretty nice too. Audobon park in New Orleans is a fabulous zoo with a great aviary. The largest zoo at the time I visited was theWhipsnade Zoo in England. Zoo World just east of Panama City Beach is small but interesting and close to Angelo's Steak Pit, the home of Gus the bull. Panama City Beach has Gulf World which has aquatic displays and nurses rescued whales and dolphins back to health. I patiently wait for my next trip to Biloxi where the human zoo is in full swing.
