Getting TO/AROUND: The subway is the quickest way to get around town. It can be a little confusing at first - there are several different lines and plenty of interchanges..... but once you get the hang of it you never need to have tired feet again!! Grab a subway map from one of the stations and plan the easiest route to your destination. Give it a try - you'll like it!!

Getting TO/AROUND: The Staten Island Ferry is just one of the fabulous things about New York - it is a FREE 25 minute ferry trip from Manhattan to Staten Island, that travels right past the Statue of Liberty. There are approx 33,000 trips made each year. It is an amazing ride just for the site-seeing aspect. We rode from Manhattan to Staten Island as the sun was setting, and got some great photos and views of the Statue of Liberty. On the way back to Manhattan we had the fabulous view of the city all lit up - just beautiful!! Magic - and free! It doesn't get better than that!

Getting TO/AROUND: What trip to New York would be complete without a ride in a yellow cab! We caught a cab from JFK to our hotel in Midtown Manhattan. There is a set fare for this trip of 35 USD, plus tolls....oh, and a tip of course. This is actually pretty good value, especially when you arrive late-ish at night like we did. We also caught a cab a couple of times at night after dinner. Just make sure you catch one in the right location to enable you to zip down one of the avenues and get all the green lights.

Getting TO/AROUND: Grand Central Station is Manhattan's main train interchange. It was first opened in 1913, and has recently been renovated to its former glory. It is fabulous! I have never seen such a station. There is a huge marble central hall, with atrium dining areas. There is also a large food hall below this and numerous shops and great bars. It is certainly a whole lot more than just a train station!

Getting TO/AROUND: The New York Airport Service is a bus service that travels to and from JFK and LaGuardia Airports, to Manhattan and Midtown Hotels. The main pickup/drop off in Manhattan is just near Grand Central Station, with service available to some of the Midtown hotels as well, and a stop off at Penn Station. We used the service to travel back to JFK at the end of our trip, which cost us 15USD each for a oneway trip. It was an easy option, and dropped us right at the airport terminal door. Negatives - the driver was just throwing peoples luggage into the hold, and his driving was SCARY!!

Getting TO/AROUND: It was a beautiful spring day and we strolled through Central Park, enjoying the tranquility and the squirrels. Feeling a little parched we grabbed an outside table by the lake at the Boathouse. Whilst relaxing with a glass of wine a gondola went by..... Hmmmm.......how much wine had we drank!!

jumpingnorman Tue Jun 2, 2009 08:20 UTC Nice picture of the Flatiron...enjoyed reading your NY pages - we'll be walking there next week, yoohoo! Hope I find Cleopatra's monument... Have a nice day and thanks for sharing, Norman :) | Nemorino Sat Jan 10, 2009 09:32 UTC Hi Sue, your tips brought back good memories of the four years I spent in New York as a student at Columbia. A friend of mine pays next to nothing for a rent-controlled apartment on Central Park West that has been in her family for generations. | toonsarah Tue Oct 21, 2008 19:29 UTC Hi Sue - just putting together some of my thoughts from our trip to NYC and wanted to say thanks again for the tips :-) Would you mind if I linked to your Grand Central Oyster Bar one as we didn't go there? | TravellerMel Sun Aug 31, 2008 15:50 UTC LOL re: your comment on the Wall Street bull sculpture! Now THERE'S a photo to have! :-) |
