"Monterey and 17 Mile Drive" Monterey by sue_stone

Monterey Travel Guide: 976 reviews and 2,994 photos

We paid a visit to Monterey on our way from San Francisco to Carmel-by-the Sea.

First we checked out the tacky Fisherman's Wharf and said hello to the Seals/Sea Lions. Then we had a wander through the historic downtown area.

Unfortunately we didn't have time to visit Monterey's Aquarium, which is apparently one of the best in the country.

After our brief explorations we headed to Carmel, via the scenic 17 Mile Drive which joins the two towns, travelling via the exclusive Pebble Beach.

The orginal 17 mile drive began at the Hotel Del Monte, currently the Naval Postgraduate School, in Monterey. So, Monterey's "Window on the Bay," Cannery Row and Oceanview Ave in Pacific Grove, are part of the 17 mile drive AND they are free.

Great tip Sue and beautiful photos! A shame you didn't get to the aquarium though - it's as good as its reputation :-)

Fantastic little page with outstanding photos. 250 years alone on a rock by the sea, that's the life I ever dreamt of. *winkygrin*
