Take a cruise on the canals, for an hour or two. There are several cruise companies that run tours, departing every hour or so, from the main canal down the hill from the train station. It was a very plesant way to see some of the sights, with commentary in several languages.

Although you will pay the dearest prices in town, why not have a drink or meal at a cafe on Dam Square, Amsterdam's main square, and do some people watching. We had breakfast at one of the cafe's and noted that all the locals there just had a beer for their breakfast!!

The Bloemenmarkt (Flower Market) is located along the Singel Canal and is a famous floating flower market. There were many stalls with a huge selection of bulbs and cut flowers, along with plants and gardening equipment.

The main strip (no pun intended!!) of the Red Light District runs along either side of one of the many canals. The street is lined with sex-shops, venues for live-sex shows etc and red-fluro light rimmed window after red-fluro light rimmed window of scantily clad temptresses, of all ages and size, standing in the windows. Many of the windows conveniently opened right onto the street, so if you wanted to get better acquainted with one of the lovely ladies, they just open up the window, you can slip inside and then pull a curtain across the window.... You had to feel sorry for the fellows who, once satisfied, came back out onto the street, via the window, only to be met with the cheers of the passers-by!

On the 1st Saturday in September there is a Flower Parade through the city of Amsterdam. We were lucky to get a seat outside at a cafe in Dam Square to watch the colourful procession go by.

The Begijnhof is a hidden oasis in the middle of the city, consisting of gabled houses surrounding a pretty green courtyard. There is also a beautiful gothic church hidden here.

The Magna Plaza was built in 1899 and was formerly the main post office. Today it has been converted into a grand shopping centre, selling clothing, accessories and gifts. Well worth a wander around.

ForeignTrade Sun Jan 6, 2008 13:32 UTC I should go back to Amsterdam! Great tips! | toonsarah Tue Feb 20, 2007 20:31 UTC Great page Sue - you really capture the sense of a whirlwind weekend in the city. But only one restaurant tip??? I expect better of you ;) | flyingscot4 Tue Feb 20, 2007 01:21 UTC Amsterdam forever!! The houseboats were taxed even less. Now the taxes on houseboats are terrible, but not as bad as housing along the canal. The hooks on the buildings raise the furniture to the various apartments. It's because the stairs are too narrow. | Nemorino Sun Nov 19, 2006 18:25 UTC Hi Sue, thanks for your birthday wishes. I'm glad you enjoyed your weekend in Amsterdam. I was there last May for a few days and had a great time cycling all around. |
