| Tasting the local delights |
We booked a bargain 2 night holiday staying in a 5 star hotel in the centre of Brussels, and traveling on the Eurostar train (which travels through the channel tunnel), a mere 2hr 40min trip from London Waterloo.
We left London mid morning on Saturday and arrived in Brussels with plenty of time to familiarise ourselves with the main shopping strip and the magnificent Grand'Place (historic market square) and of course had to sample the local cuisine with an afternoon tea of warm belgian waffles! Dinner was at Chez Leon where we indulged in a typical Belgium meal of Mussels and fries washed down with Belgian beer. |
| Brussels number one attraction, the Mannekan Pis |
| | Sunday morning we were forced to eat again, as a huge buffet breakfast was included in our package at the hotel - deliciously creamy scrambled eggs.....and waffles of course! After breakfast we wandered down past the Grand'Place and checked out Brussels most famous tourist attraction - the Manneken Pis (the peeing boy). Then onto the Sablon area to browse in the Antiques Market and wander in some gardens nearby.
Next a visit to the Musical Instrument Museum, which is housed in an amazing renovated art-deco building. When you enter you are given infra-red headphones, and through these you can hear the sounds of the different instruments playing as you stand near each exhibition - very clever.
For lunch we indulged in more local grub - a burger from the Belgium version of McDonalds, called "Quick". We then wandered through more areas, window shopping and topping up with caffeine along the way.
Sunday night we went to a jazz bar called L'Archiduc, which is in a groovy art-deco building and is fitted out to look like the inside of a cruise ship.... dinner that night consisted of peanuts and a few martinis.... |
Unfortunately, due to something I ate....or perhaps drank....Monday was a bit of a right off for me and I spent the day in bed.
Alex went off to do some sight seeing and visited the Atomium ("a visual representation of the concept of an atom"). Late afternoon we were back on the train and home to a very cold flat. | | |

I was there in December and had a fine time, despite not being able to access the CycloCity system. I also once took the EuroStar from Brussels to London (Waterloo at that time) and back. | jo104 Thu Aug 2, 2007 16:22 UTC Am scouting round my friend's pages for tips on Brugge, these are good, now where are me foodie tips for Brugge you'll have to go NOW :-) I'll look on TP Hugs Jo |
