Mont St-Michel is a small rocky island just off the coast of Normandy, close to the border with Brittany. This tiny, tidal island is linked to the mainland by a 2km long causeway.
It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in France, with over 3.5million people visiting every year!
Even if you don't plan on visiting, you may be lucky to catch a glimpse of the island as you are driving on one of the roads in the proximity - you can see it from miles away.
Accommodation on the island is expensive and limited (particularly in summer), so we chose to stay in the small town of Pontorson, which is 9km away from the island. |

pure1942 Thu May 7, 2009 21:32 UTC Another great page & pics Sue. Visted St. Michel twice - can't remenber much of my first trip as I was very young. 2nd trip was very enjoyable and as we visited in early April, missed the huge crowds you mentioned ;) It really is a beautiful place. Thanks | aussiedoug Mon Sep 1, 2008 04:53 UTC Debating whether I can squeeze a visit here (after England) before going onto to Belgium then sthn Germany before 10-14 days in Italy. As usual well written and helpful tips mate! Cheers and see you next April. | Sue08080 Sat Jul 14, 2007 19:38 UTC Thank you for the birthday wishes. I love Normandy and, though touristy, I still love the Mont! | Dabs Fri Aug 4, 2006 15:33 UTC You brought back some nice memories, such a magical setting!
