Things To Do: Medieval Castle
  • Tip Rating:
  • The main attraction in Fougeres is the impressive medieval castle, sitting proudly in the lower town. The castle is in great condition and is a must see if you are in the area.

You enter the castle via the moat bridge, walk through the forecourt and then through to the area where everyday life was carried out, except in times of war when the townspeople took refuge here.

The castle has well maintained ramparts that you can walk around, and 5 towers dating back from the 12th to the 14th centuries, that you can explore. From the top of the towers there are great views over the medieval streets of the lower town.

Open every day from 1 February to 31 December. In June 2006, entrance cost 4.80 euro per adult.

  • Besides the lovely medieval castle, Fougeres is also home to two large churches.

Eglise St-Leonard sits up on a hill, looking over the medieval castle and lower town. The church went through lots of modifications between the 12th & 17th centuries, with further enlargements during the 19th century.

It has a rose window over the entrance door which is a copy of the one found in Eglise St-Chapelle in Paris. We stuck our head in for a look around before heading down to the castle.

Located in the lower town, not far from the castle is Eglise St-Sulpice. The church is not as impressive looking as the Eglise St-Leonard, but does have a great spire. The church was constructed between the 13th & 18th centuries. Inside there is some lovely wooden panelling and some magnificent granite reredoses.

You get a good view over Eglise St-Sulpice from the castle walls.

Your photos are beautiful! I visited Fougeres when I was 14 - my first time in Europe! It's so hard to believe I was there - thanks for bringing back the memories!

Well isn't *that* a nifty pic? Geesh, these gorgeous small towns make me want to cry with envy. That's it--I'm boycotting your pages, missy! (Yeah... like I could really stay away...)
