Former Africa Occidental Espanola

Dakhla

Dakhla. Former Villa Cisneros .
Is a coastal city in the Atlantic Ocean situated in the Yala peninsula which economical base is fishing. Capital city of the southern region of Rio de Oro (River of gold) in the former province of Spanish Sahara (Sahara Espanol) until 1975 (year of the moroccan occupation), when its population was around 5,000 inhabitants. In that times the city was made up of white "chalets" that gave to the city a special taste.
In Dakhla was located the oldest building in Western Sahara, the fortress. It was demolished past year by moroccan authorities.

All the location names that I have written and I will write in this page (even the name of the city) are the old ones. I do this in this way because is easier for me, and I believe that if you had been there in that times it will help you for remembering. This are the names that we used and as we wrote when this territory was part of Spain, before the Moroccan occupation.
