Strathcona Provincial Park is located in the centre of Vancouver Island about a 4 - 5 hour journey from both Vancouver and Victoria. There's lots of camping sites most of which you don't need to reserve for and for now there is just the one lodge which has a range of accomadation from the functional to lakeside cottages. Buttle Lake camp ground is the only reservable camping spot in the park and its where we based ourselves for the long weekend we spent here.
So what's there to do? well for families there's the beaches, most of which are deserted even on national holidays. The water is cold but on a hot day its great for swimming. There great fishing here and of course lots and lots of hiking trails which is the main reason we came.
I have included a number of tips including a summary of the treks we went on. The most popular trails here can be busy (a relative term!) in the summer but no where near the sorts of crowd Seymour or the Grind attract.
There's a Park Ranger's office offering lots of advise and its open everyday so its worth making enquiries if you're not sure which trails to try out. |
