Our trip to Alaska

*Discovering Alaska*

My husband & I had the pleasure of visiting Alaska first-hand several years ago. This was indeed a trip of a lifetime! Our journey began in July as we planned a 2-week trip to visit the Land of the Midnight Sun. Our tour guide was my brother-in-law who lived in Anchorage at the time, which was to our advantage since he knew his way around to all of the different tourist sites there. Needless to say we crammed everything imaginable into our vacation. (In fact, I came home and filled up 4 scrapbooks of photos and journals from our trip)! It was always daylight during the time we spent, since we went during the summer month of July, so it was very hard to go to bed and fall asleep at 11 or 12 when the sun was still out and you could hear people weed-eating and cutting their grass outside*.
We boarded the Alaskan Railway one day (which was my favorite part of this venture since I love trains) for a roundtrip 4-hr train ride to the town of Seward which was spectacular. Spent all day touring the town. Rented a boat for a fishing excursion yet had to turn back due to high swells from the ocean waters and approaching storms. Met the towns-people and learned about their native culture and history. Toured the Aquatic Marine Center located in the downtown area. Saw local musicians celebrating the 4th of July holidays in their native attire. Did some hiking, and lots of walking! Enjoyed fine foods in the local eateries. Browsed the many gift shops in town, even made a few purchases while there for family and friends back home.
Another day we visited the Anchorage Zoo and saw all different types of animals that we've never seen before. The middle portion of our trip we played a round of golf atop a mountain on a nearby golf course with a beautiful log-built Lodge and clubhouse that was pretty cool. We even rented an RV and drove hundreds of miles viewing the scenery in Alaska and went to Barrow at Willows Fishing Camp and set up camp in a nearby Trading Post to fish for King Salmon along the shores of the river banks, I called it combat fishing since I've never seen so many people participating in such a fishing tournament before; yet we had a ball. The weather was great for our excursion and all the locals told us we brought them the record-breaking temperatures in the 90 degree range (which was unheard of until then according to the locals), so we felt blessed that we was able to see and feel things first-hand,that we have only heard about before making this the very best trip of a lifetime. Glaciers, huge mountains, moose, breathtaking scenery, waterfalls, The Pacific ocean, gorges, Resurrection Bay, Yosemites, animals, marinas, eagles, gorges, mountain goats, elk, caribou..which I called reindeer*so many and so much just to name a few. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and want to go back some day.
