Monchique is a small market town in a scenic range of rounded hills of the same name. The shops are full of local produce, including baskets, rough woolen sweaters, soft leather slippers and gloves, honey, and medronho firewater.

Eight kilometres up from Monchique, the rocky summit of Foia is the Algarve's highest point at just under 900m. The winding road to Foia is lined by restaurants famous for their barbecued chicken piri-piri.

Gostei da ideia do safari sem animais :o) A regiao do Algarve deve mesmo ser muito bonita.

I missed visiting Monchique while I was in Algarve, and now after seeing your page I'm so sorry I missed it! Great page!

Thanks for the tips and photos! That BBQ peri-peri chicken on the road up Foia mountain sounds very inviting! I will be there in two weeks time to check it out!

We walked all the way up to the old monastery in Monchique to find it had been closed off and taken over by Gypsies. Nice Page (~_~)
