This is a sad story
In the name of progress, a dam is being built to develop a region: Alentejo. in that area there is a small village called "Luz". Luz village will be destroyed and put underwater. it's population will be removed for a new village, leaving behind all their homes, memories and land. this page is focused on this little village, living this situation that is said to be a benefit to Alentejo. It s a story about lack of power and suppression of a population

as it was the first time we've ever been there. i met some locals, their way of living, and with the village itself. So, during day time, i walked throu the village, the lousa castle, the river and landscapes. By night, we went to the coffee shops: the social meeting point of the village. most of the men of the village, if not all, spend there great part of the day. by 6 p.m, the coffee shops are almost empty, for dinnertime is near, and people go home. women are more difficult to find there, especially during the night. despite being friendly people, some of the older men are still very conservatives, for they are used to their one world - Aldeia da Luz - and traditions.

Bwana_Brown Sun Oct 2, 2005 10:22 UTC Yes, the Alentejo is indeed a beautiful part of Portugal, one of my favourites too. This brings back memories of a small community I visited as a child, also now drowned by a hydro dam. Well done Vitor. | kenHuocj Sat Oct 30, 2004 22:05 UTC progress , if can be called that. has it's drawbacks too ;-))) | olja1234 Sat Jul 24, 2004 17:08 UTC How sad story about the village, that doesn't exist anymore. | Pawtuxet Thu Jul 22, 2004 15:42 UTC Indeed....a VERY SAD story. I cannot immagine anyone putting my village under water. Surely there must have been another way...but perhaps not enough political clout?? |
