Bucharest ~ Two Mornings' Tour

by gosiaPL - last update: May 1, 2004

FROM A BIASED POINT OF VIEW

Old Princely Court
Shame to admit it but my only association with Bucharest before I went there was Ceaucescu regime and its violent end, and perhaps the giant Parliament building. With little time to read about the city before the trip, VT pages came in quite handy but left me puzzled. I was going on a business trip and I knew I would have little spare time... Why should I want to see bank buildings and parks...? And would there be anything else apart from evidence of Ceaucescu's grandeur mania...?

Tips on churches seemed fine, they always work for me as I believe they encapsulate a country's early culture and often tell about its history, which I'm always keen on learning. The Village Museum also seemed a good idea for a tour of Romania's folk architecture. But I wondered about Bucharest's early history and heritage, considering that it is the capital city of the United Principalities...

So my view of Bucharest is biased by what I was looking for. Apparently the name Bucharest (Bucuresti) mirrors the Romanian word for "gladness" (bucurie) and I think I've found places that encapsulate this meaning. Sure I can't say I've seen all there is in Bucharest -- I had only two mornings and a clever taxi driver & guide, Ion. But I guess I will remember the city for two special sites: the beautiful Stavropoleos Church with its courtyard and the Old Princely Court that was the seat of Wallachian principal power and the cradle of Bucharest city. And the features that impressed me most were the little old churches with arches and columned porches, not Ceaucescu's Parliament or his megalomaniac Unirii Blvd and Sq.

You certainly missed Strada Polona (Polish Street), a quite important street in the central part of Bucharest :-)
