Kazimierz Dolny, or simply "Kazik" as we call it in common Polish... I'd wanted to see the place for about three years and finally I made it in August 2003. Not only because it is an artists' colony, but first of all for its authenticity and the beauty of its architecture . It's somewhat "required" of a Pole to spend a weekend there or just pop in for a day or two. If you are a Pole who has never been there, you can get really strange looks from the "initiated into Kazik"!

This lovely small town is not even located by a major road and yet it attracts people like a magnet . It sits quietly and lazily in the picturesque Vistula river valley, and that itself is a good enough reason to spend a relaxing weekend there... Then there’s the old architecture and the artists who come here to paint and exhibit their works in the local galleries or just to sell them directly in the market square.

Oh, isn't that square busy on a warm weekend! Crowds of tourists wandering around or enjoying their meal and drink at one of the outdoor pubs... Artists sell their paintings, and local craftsmen and artists try to make their living off your pocket too - you just can't resist looking through their stuff! Some folk musicians play their merry tunes, and then in another corner of the market some young costumed guys improvise a knights' tournament... But Sunday evening the town goes quiet, the weekend tourists leave and you have all the charm of the town just to yourself.

My second visit to Kazimierz Dolny was with Janet (Pawtuxet) who had read about the town on VT and wanted to see it for herself. Well, the end of October is not the best timing if you go there for art as most artists come only for spring and summer. But then there's the ruined castle and the architecture to admire... unless the rainy weather stops you from going out :-)

Just go there... see it, feel it, enjoy it!

You can check the simplified map of the town's centre

This will give you background for some of my tips. The RYNEK is, of course, the main (market) square - the key point of reference for directions in this little town.

Pros and Cons
