Lindisfarne Travel Guide: 67 reviews and 166 photos

Lindisfarne is an island by the east coast of Northern England, sort of half-way between Newcastle and Edinburgh. And it is quite amazing for several reasons.

On the simplest level, but quite an exciting one too, it is a great outdoor adventure - you cross to the island when the North Sea tide is low and the beaten road is uncovered. And then you take pleasure in exploring the island's Castle ( see above ) or the Priory ( see below ) ruined at the order of King Henry VIII...

But on the deeper level it is a wonderful spiritual trip if you're prepared to look at it that way. Lindisfarne was the cradle of Celtic Christianity in this part of England, and a scene of a horrible bloodshed by the Vikings, for which it is called the Holy Island.

My page does not really do justice to the beauty and atmosphere of Lindisfarne. But if my page raises your interest in this place, check the Holy Island's vast information pages.

The Norman times Priory is a stunning site that you can't miss on Lindisfarne. It has nothing to do with the first Celtic monks, but it's got its own tragic history owed to Henry VIII's decision to disslove monasteries. Read about it in my tips.

A spiritual travel to Lindisfarne would not be complete without mentioning the hand-written and jewel-adorned Bible that the Celtic monks made. Be sure to read about the famous Lindisfarne Gospels - I really wouldn't know how to shorten the incredible story about this priceless work!

Above all, visit Lindisfarne if you're ever anywhere near the north-eastern corner of England. It is a truly unique place, I hope I can visit it again one day...

Great Page, I drove through Northumberland last year, on my way back to the Newcastle ferryport. Made a lunch stop on Holy Island, just as you suggested. Did you go to Alnwick castle, too?
