As a start, independent travellers may wish to check out some of the tour agents that'll bring you to Huanglong or Jiuzhaigou, which are the two main nature reserves accessible from the city (after many hours of winding and rocky mountain roads)

With the opening of the new airport recently in late 2003, expect to reduce 5 hours or more of road travel. However, you must still climb up winding mountain roads (that, you cannot avoid).

The funny thing I learnt was that domestic travel costs much more than booking a tour from outside China.
