"1 Night Stopover" Nagoya by akikonomu

Flying into Nagoya and making a short stopover does not allow me to give a proper introduction of Nagoya. Based on my usual distaste for cities and places I tramped about for 6 hours, Nagoya does not make it to my favourite list of cities.

Initial research prompted me to visit the Tokugawa musuem which houses the scrolls of paintings depicting the Tale of Genji. So it was a disappointment that it was closed during the Tuesday we were in Nagoya. Well, that leaves us with the second choice Nagoya castle.

Like most of the industrial cities such as Osaka and Tokyo that were heavily bombarded during the second world war, Nagoya was not spared the same fate. Hence, much of Nagoya are post war developments, including the castle.

Highways, industrial and tall buildings, make up most of the city's scenary. You don't need to look hard for restaurants and shops but they don't seem to possess a distinct flavour. The retail scene cannot compare with Tokyo's and the food scene seems to lack something to crow about. This was the narrow view I had during my short stay there.

So, it's not likely I'll rediscover the city except to visit the Tokugawa museum (due to my strange fascination with anything to do with the Tale of Genji) one day. Til then...
