Seoul Off The Beaten Path

Art Galleries: Museum of Korean Embroidery
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Not exactly a typical museum. Small room situated in a small building beside a dental clinic. Holds a small private collection of embroidered works. Of particular interest is a embrodery from the palace.

Getting there is half the challenge. After exiting Hakdong station (line7), you'll see a sign pointing to the museum. You'll end up at a deadend where a carpark is. Your best bet is to get the guard at the carpark to show you to the museum, after weaving through a back alley.

Then you make your way up to the 2nd (or is it 3rd) storey where you see a dental clinic. The door of the gallery ends up locked? Go into the dental clinic and tell the nurse you're trying to get in, she makes a call and pronto, the keyholder turns up. Only for the ultimate embroidery fan.

    Art Galleries: Theme Museum
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Another reclusive and strange theme "museum" in the Anguk area which I chanced across while strolling in the area. This is the Tibetan Museum.

Other Place to Go: Subway stations
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The subway stations are a sight in themselves. Most subways would have a special theme or artwork displayed in them. For instance Chungmuro station is modelled to look like a cavern, and these interesting displays of kites were also found in a subway station.

Keep your eyes peeled for interesting finds.

Off The Beaten Path: Cartoon Museum
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Enroute to Nansam Tower from the subway station, you'd pass by the Cartoon Museum which is also a stone's throw away from the Women's University. Closed on the day I was there - peered through the glass doors for a view of anime strips.

Great for cartoon and comic fans. Take a picture with the cartoon characters placed outside the museum or pop in for a short toilet break.

    Other Place to Go: Bukchonhanok-gil
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Around the Anguk area, there's a slope of traditional residential houses with a view of the tower on Namsan in the distance. You'll also get an rooftop view of the palace.

If you're a K-fan, this area is also near to the filming site for the house of one of the protaganist in some sad love story. Souvenirs hawked aggresively nearby (i believe it's right across a high school).

I liked the pic of the Cheonggyecheon River. When I lived in Seoul that area was just a big 6 or 8 lane street. Now a beautiful park.
