Campo Dei Fiori is Rome at its finest. I stayed in a hotel in Campo dei Fiori so I got to know the area well. There are cafes (for morning cafe, paninis for lunch), delicious restaurants (some inexpensive ones too, but all good), gelati shops, shopping (great clothes!), supermarkets (tons of cheese), and coolest of all (a market in the middle of the piazza: with all kinds of stuff: fruits, veggies, clothes, knick knacks, souvenirs and you can bargain with them - no where else have I discovered this). It's a great little Roman hub where you can taste Roman life, culture, people, and of course great food (can you tell I loved the food?).

Spanish Steps: Ah to be rich. The Spanish steps is known for its shops; great shops. If you hunt hard (I mean really hard), you'll find bargains. This is the neighborhood of Cartier and Louis Vutton . Beautiful clothes (unique designs), beautiful jewelry, lots of people (ladies...guys on the steps will flirt with you). Oh and of course, see the steps as well. :-) When you make it to the top of the stairs (it isn't like the steps of the Duomo in Florence where you need a medic by the time you get to the top), there is a church. A great place to stop and rest and if you are so inclined, pray. There are some interesting works of art in the chapel and the view is spectacular from the top.

The Coliseum is definitely a must. You've seen it in movies, postcards, books, etc. The view is gorgeous at night but you can only visit it in the daytime. It's great if you have a guide (or you can just subtly hang around a group that has a guide) to hear the different tidbits about the Coliseum. For example, how could anyone sit on those stone seats? Answer:BYOC (Bring Your Own Cushion).

If you can't make it to Pompey, you can visit this Roman ancient city which has been preserved. The outskirts of the town, like most ancient Roman towns, has a "city of the dead" where the dead were buried. The dead had their own mini-town. It's a very interesting place to visit.

The Roman Forums are chock full of old relics. You get to visit the site where Caesar spoke (and is supposedly buried). There are ancient religous sites as well with statues of the Vestal Virgins, women who took a vow of chastity in their service to Vesta the goddess of the hearth. If they broke their vow of chastity, they would be buried alive with no visible traces of their burial site so that they couldn't be dug up!
