The Anne Frank House is one of th emost sees in Amsterdam. If you have ever read the book, walking into the hiding space, void of furniture, will bring back all the emotions you could pick up from her diary. It is a very moving experience, as you try to imagine two families hiding in this space for 2 years, always waiting to be discovered. It is amazing they didn't go insane. you can also view her actual diary in a glass display. The lines get extremely long, so get there early, or better yet, get there early on a week-day. If you do get stuck in a line, it does move somewhat quickly.

During the end of April/beginning of May, this is a must see. I'm not much of a flower person, but this place was amazing. It definately exceeded all my expectations, as I was being dragged here. You can spend a few hours wandering around the gardens and the colors are unbelievable. I suppose you have to time your visit to balance the crushing crowds, with the flowers in full bloom. We got there early in the day, and the crowds were not bad until we left.

With over 75 km of canals and 1400 bridges, it is easy to enjoy the atmosphere of walking along the water. What a great lifestyle to live along the canals of Amsterdam in one of the many houseboats. Their seems to be plenty of boat tours, but we really enjoyed just strolling along the many canal banks.

It's hard to describe the intial feelings of opening a menu showing all the varieties of marijuana available to go with your cappucino. 20 years ago, the feeling would have been euphoria, but sadly, I don't think 'it was legal where I smoked' would be an acceptable answer for a failed drug test. My wife and I bounced from cafe to cafe enjoying a relaxing afternoon.

This wax museum, which is right on the Dam Square, is another must see. It was a great way to spend an hour and the life like figures were amazing. It's probably the one time I forgot my camera, and that was definately a mistake. You can get right next to your favorite stars and realize how short they actually are. Don't miss this.

You must walk through the red light district at night, or at least in the early evening. The environment is almost surreal with all the flashing lights and women behind glass walls, with waiting bedroom doors. Even the lines to get into the live sex shows are entertaining to watch. If you are going to take a picture, keep it VERY discreet.

Dam square is the central square in Amsterdam, if you know where you are related to this, you will not get lost. It is also the perfect place to people watch, as their always seemed to be a crowd moving through the square or sitting at the monument. This was the location of the original dam in the Amstel River, so it truly is the historic city center.

The palace was built in the 16th century to replace the existing town hall. It was built on over 10,000 piles to give it stability in the marshy area. It was converted to the Royal Palace by Napolean's brother during his brief rule, and is still the official residance of the queen. Although it is only used for official functions. It may have been the grey skies, but I found the palace to be somewhat bland and un-distinct.

This is the highest tower in Amsterdam and built atop a protestant church consturcted in 1631. It is topped with a replica of the imperial crown of Emperor Maximillian. There is a spectacular view from the top, but you must book a tour with a group of 5, at least a half hour in advance. This can be difficult, as the line gets long, so get there early. While Remembrandt was buried at the church, his actual grave has not been located.

This church was built in the late 1300's, which means it is only new compared with the old church. It has been destroyed several times by fire and rebuilt. Since the early 1800's, all the Dutch Monach coronations take place in this church, which is right next to the Royal Palace. While the outside is rather drab, the inside is worth a visit.
