Thornes is three floors of shopping and one floor of performance space. Sparkling accessories, scarves in every material, Tibetian bells, and the best cheddar tomato soup this side of the Mississippi. The Mulberry Tree is the most adorible children's store I have had the delight to shop in. Shoes, fresh flowers, fine vegitarian dining, high-end cutlery- all is available under one roof. Up the grand stair case, down the elevator, or out the side door through the famous Steve Harrell's ice cream shop( it is recommended that you try the chocolate pudding or burnt sugar ice creams as you pass through)- it is a maze worth exploring.
When I was small there was an old fashioned metal grate elevator running through the center of the building. It thrilled me to ride in that metal beast. The elevator was a relic of McCallum's- the original resident of the building- one of the first department stores in Northampton- back in the days when ladies wore gloves and didn't smoke in public.
